Dear Jessica,

Thanks for your email re nominations for life membership of AQUA. Your note
jogged my memory to remind members that every 4 years each member
country (ie that has paid its membership fees) of INQUA can nominate
(normally) one person to be an honorary life member of INQUA. In 2011, New
Zealand nominated John Chappell (seconded by Australia) and Australia
nominated Peter Kershaw (seconded by NZ). The nominations are usually due
not less than 6 months prior to the full congress (ie by late Jan 2015 for
Nagoya congress). Australasians are rather lacking in the list of current
fellows. Rule 1 states "Prominent internationally known Quaternary
scientists who have been active in INQUA may be elected by the General
Assembly to be Honorary Life Fellows of the Union"

Nominations comprise:
(1) signed nominations by reps from each nominating country (eg I would
hope NZ, Oz)
(2) Short description of the candidate's contribution to Quaternary Science
and/or INQUA (about a page)
(3) Short CV incl. publications
I am happy to work with the OZ Inqua rep (and to take advice from Aqua
members) to help prepare two nominations (NZ, Oz) for Jan 2015. If you have
any suggestions for nominees please contact me (perhaps after discussions
at Mildura) and we can prepare a short list (details must wait till later).
Nominees must agree to be nominated.

I note also nominations for (1) *the Shackleton Medal* for outstanding
young Quaternarist, (2) Liu* Tungsheng Distinguished Career Medal* for
distinguished service to the international community in Quaternary science,
and (3) *INQUA Distinguished Service Medal* (awarded to individuals with a
recognized record of sustained and outstanding contributions to the
maintenance or development of INQUA's important functions (e.g.
organization, operations, outputs, publicity) are all due *by 21 Sept 2014*.
It is envisaged that candidates will have completed their service to INQUA
at the time of their nomination). Another topic for Mildura? It's going to
be busy.

Many thanks

Kind regards
David Lowe
