About ANSTO
The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is home to Australia’s nuclear science and technical expertise. More than 1000 scientists, engineers and experts work at ANSTO and use nuclear science and technology to answer the big questions in the world around us – improving health outcomes, increasing our understanding of the environment and climate change and identifying new opportunities for Australian industry.
We operate much of our country’s landmark science facilities including one of the world’s most modern nuclear research reactors (OPAL). Importantly, ANSTO is helping to improve our health with one in two Australians benefitting from the nuclear medicines produced using the OPAL research reactor while being treated for serious illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.
The Institute for Environmental Research (IER) is a centre of excellence in the southern hemisphere in understanding how environmental systems function and interact, and the impact that humans are having on the environment by applying nuclear and isotopic techniques. IER’s research is discovery directed and focused on addressing major environmental issues such as climate change, water resource sustainability, air pollution, human impact on Earth systems and waste in the environment.
About the position
The four key projects within IER are: Isotopes in Climate Change and Atmospheric Systems; Isotopes for Water; Nuclear Methods in Earth Systems (NMES); and Accelerator Science.
The Nuclear Methods in Earth Systems (NMES) project is divided into 3 tasks and the primary role of this position is to lead research undertaken on the environmental impacts of human activities, primarily involving application of equipment available in IER’s world class Environmental Radioactivity Measurement Centre (ERMC). This position will also require strong leadership capability and the successful candidate will effectively lead, mentor and manage a team and its scientific resources.
Duties and responsibilities
•Provide leadership in relation to the NMES project.
•Utilise scientific expertise to manage research laboratories and aid the development of team members through motivating, coaching and mentoring to achieve successful outcomes.
•Produce and lead research of an international standard and provide specialised scientific advice.
Skills and Experience
•PhD in Chemistry, Earth Science or Environmental Science.
•Demonstrated research experience and publication record in a related field.
•In-depth understanding of radionuclide behaviour in environmental systems and / or application of isotopic dating techniques.
•Knowledge of synchrotron or accelerator mass spectrometry techniques would be an advantage.
•People management skills and the ability to motivate, coach and develop others.
“This position is a great opportunity to build on your strong research skills by managing a dynamic and well-equipped team undertaking cutting-edge environmental research in one of Australia’s leading scientific facilities. We are looking for a promising scientist who has the potential to become a visionary leader to fill this role” Tim Payne – Leader of Nuclear Methods in Earth Systems project
