Dear all,
In December 2014 the first workshop of early/mid-career researchers (EMCRs) in Geosciences was held at Macquarie University. One of the aims of this workshop (as far as we understand) was to find ways to united and support Geoscience EMCRs. A potential, tangible outcome would be to be more supportive of each other when it comes to research funding (e.g. find ways to increase funding to the Geoscience community as a whole. The Astronomy community was taken as an example of how to go about this (although it is difficult to compare, since it is much smaller than ours).
Another of the outcomes of this workshop was to produce a white paper, from an EMCR perspective, on the future directions and resource needs for Australian Geosciences research, as a contribution to the Geosciences decadal plan from the Academy of Science's Earth Sciences Committee, which is currently being drafted. Four members of drafting Committee were at the workshop and were receptive to the idea of the early/mid-career community having a coordinated effort to provide their input and feedback on the decadal plan. While the population at that workshop was for the most part the Solid Earth community, we think it is important to get the AQUA community EMCRs involved too.
So what's next? Again, we do think that all aspects of Geosciences should be represented. There is much to gain by being strategic about where to take our research and being involved in its national planning.
If you are interested, there are two ways to get involved: (i) join the Australian Geoscientist Network (http://linkd.in/1yWwu0b) and (ii) contact us if you'd like to be involved in the writing of the white paper.
Regards,
Anthony Dosseto (tonyd at uow.edu.au) and Helen McGregor(mcgregor at uow.edu.au or helen.mcgregor at anu.edu.au)
