Dear all,
Dr Larissa Schneider (ANU) will be giving a GeoQuEST seminar entitled:
"Mercury Studies in Archaeology and Environmental Sciences: a new facility at ANU"
See abstract below and flyer attached.
When: Friday 16 September 4PM
Where: Building 41, Room G03A (SEES Map Library), University of Wollongong
Abstract:
Mercury (Hg) research is rising in prominence globally due to its application to wide range of studies, including archaeology and environmental sciences. In this seminar, we will discuss a range of case studies that are underway or have the potential to be developed at the ANU as a result of the new Hg analytical facility in the Archaeology and Palaeoecology lab at ANU. These studies include
* Archaeology: the utilisation of Hg analysis in studies the antiquity and nature of early mining and metal trading (cinnabar).
* Archaeozoology: tracking Hg levels in skeletal or exoskeletal remains as indicators of past faunal (including human) life ways and health.
* Geochemistry: the study of Hg as an environmental contaminant with the rise of industrialisation around the globe.
* Palaeoclimatology: improving our understanding of the dynamics of atmospheric Hg levels and its relationship to climate change.
* Ecology: the analysis of Hg levels in living animals and plants as a trophic indicator in food web systems.
We hope to encourage further constructive collaborations with the University of Wollongong, taking advantage of the recently purchase DMA-80 facility (MEC Award 2016) that allow us to analyse Hg in solids and liquids in an economical, fast and accurate way.
Regards,
Anthony Dosseto
