PhD Opportunities at the University of Adelaide – ARC Linkage project on the UNESCO World Heritage Naracoorte Caves fossil sites.

We are seeking several highly motivated and talented PhD students to join our team and participate in a newly funded 4-year Australian Research Council Linkage project on the UNESCO World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves, South Australia.

This project aims to establish an unprecedented record of faunal extinctions and past climate change at Australia’s richest Quaternary fossil site. The study will integrate all aspects of the preserved deposits, employing new approaches in geochronology, palaeontology and geochemistry to develop comprehensive palaeoecological and palaeoclimate histories. Over $1.1M of funding has been committed to this project, which involves research partnerships with University of Melbourne, University of Queensland, the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, South Australian Museum, Naracoorte Lucindale Council, Defence Science and Technology Group, Terre a Terre Pty Ltd Partner Organisation, and the Wrattonbully Wine Industries Association.

PhD projects are available in the following fields:
1. Geochronology – establishing high resolution chronostratigraphic frameworks for fossil deposits using OSL dating and direct dating of fossil remains.
2. Palaeontology – palaeoecological analyses of middle Pleistocene fossil records.
3. Palaeoclimatology - multiproxy palaeoclimate reconstructions of sediment infill deposits spanning the last five glacial cycles.
4. Palaeoenvironmental reconstructions – quantitative assessments of cave structure, infill history, sedimentology and stratigraphy.

Domestic (Australian) and international students are encouraged to apply for these projects. Applicants should have a Master’s, Honours or equivalent degree in a related discipline. A background in Quaternary science, geology, geochronology or palaeontology would be advantageous, as would some experience with laboratory and field work. Candidates must be enthusiastic, able to think independently, willing to learn new techniques, and be fluent in written and spoken English.

The PhD project will be undertaken at the School of Physical Sciences, University of Adelaide, and will be supervised by Dr Lee Arnold and Dr Liz Reed, as well as other researchers on the ARC Linkage team. For further information on our research activities, see:
