Dear Members,
I am an archaeologist who works for the Wadawurrung (Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation). The Wadawurrung are a Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) in Victoria and under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (the Act) have a regulatory responsibility in assessing Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMP), i.e. cultural and archaeological reports.
We are currently in the process of preparing several practice notes for consultant archaeologists on stratigraphic practices and archaeological testing and salvage methods and techniques. Part of the Act requires characterisation of the nature and extent of deposits with archaeological artefacts and features in order to understand their significance. Obviously this requires a suite of skills that fall within the realm of Quaternary Science, as well as archaeology. Unfortunately, in Victoria geoarchaeological or general training in Quaternary techniques is rare amongst consultant archaeologists.
With this in mind we are seeking expressions of interest from relevant Quaternary specialists to provide services in the following areas:
- Fieldwork: recording and sampling sections, or logging borehole data (geoarchaeologists, Quaternary geologists, soil geomorphologists etc);
- Analysis/characterisation of soils, paleosols and sediments, e.g. soil chemistry, particle size, magnetic susceptibility etc;
- Dating via C14, OSL, TL etc;
- Palaeoenvironmental studies, e.g. pollen, diatom and phytolith analysis etc;
- Soil micromorphology; and
- Provenance studies of lithic raw materials.
The idea is that we would put your details on our website and provide links and details for consultant archaeologists to contact the relevant specialists on a project-by-project basis: we would not be directly engaging you for the CHMP process. However, we are planning several research projects in the future that will require specialist input.
We would also welcome Quaternary scientists who are seeking to undertake research projects within the Wadawurrung RAP area.
Please contact me directly via my details below (email or mobile) if you are interested.
Many thanks.
Regards,
