Good morning everyone,
Next week, I'm pleased to announce the first ever Black in Geoscience Week! In conjunction with other Black geoscientists, I have put together this week to provide people with the opportunity to network and share their stories of what it's like to be a Black geoscientist. More importantly, we want to use it as a platform for people to learn and understand what is required for us as geoscientists to work towards an improved representation in our community.
We've put together a range of activities, ranging from talks to panel discussions, allowing as many people as possible to engage. As someone who's been on the coordinating committee, I'm very excited to see this all come together.
In December 2019, it was reported by Nature that geosciences has the lowest diversity in STEM field subjects in the US. Given that this can be applicable to many others parts of the world and following an EGU post on being Black in Geosciences, we are hoping that next week will lead the field to improve both in representation and diversity. For those who want to get involved, we have most of our activity happening via our Twitter and Instagram page's, which you can follow using the hashtag #BlackinGeoscienceWeek (or follow: @BlkinGeoscience). I'm asking you all to share this project with all your personal networks, resulting in us having the biggest impact possible!
Any questions, feel free to email me.
Cheers,
Craig
