James Cook University Archaeology is seeking applicants for 2 fully-funded PhD projects in zooarchaeology and bioarchaeology
Come and join our expanding team of archaeologists at James Cook University focused on understanding human pasts in the tropics!
The first project will explore the long-term sustainability of Holocene Great Barrier Reef Indigenous fisheries. This research will utilise both zooarchaeological and biomolecular analyses to examine changing fish population structure and resilience, which will extend ecological baselines and foreground the role of Indigenous fishing practices.
The PhD will be supervised by Dr Ariana Lambrides on the JCU Cairns campus as part of a recently-awarded ARC DECRA project titled '10,000 years of Indigenous fisheries informs future Great Barrier Reef.' For more information email ariana.lambrides at jcu.edu.au<mailto:ariana.lambrides at jcu.edu.au>
The second project will be a bioarchaeological research project focused on health and disease in prehistoric Myanmar. The research will expand our current archaeological knowledge of this focal but under-researched area, which will be of particular benefit in understanding Myanmar in relation to surrounding regions and the wider Southeast Asian context.
The PhD will be supervised by Dr Anna Willis on the JCU Townsville campus as part of a recently-awarded ARC DECRA project titled 'Hidden histories in teeth: The key to unlocking secrets in ancient Myanmar.' For more information email anna.willis1 at jcu.edu.au<mailto:anna.willis1 at jcu.edu.au>
Successful applicants will join a strongly collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment, with unparalleled opportunities for support and mentoring from world-leading researchers and access to outstanding facilities and infrastructure. Successful applicants will commence in either 2021 or 2022 and receive a stipend valued at $28,592 per annum for 3.5 years, funding for research costs and access to funds for conference travel and professional development. Enrolment is subject to JCU's HDR admissions and scholarship policy requirements. Domestic applicants only.
Send expressions of interest directly to Dr Lambrides or Dr Willis no later than 31 May 2021.
