Call for Papers

Southern Hemisphere records of Late Quaternary climate change, people and dust.
A Special Issue of Journal of Quaternary Science in honour of the late Lynda Petherick

The Journal of Quaternary Science has agreed to publish a Special Issue in honour of a stalwart of the Quaternary community, Dr Lynda Petherick, who died unexpectedly, aged 40, early in 2022. Lynda was a driving force behind research into Late Quaternary climate change and human-environment interaction in the Southern Hemisphere and undertook pioneering work on using dust records for reconstructing atmospheric circulation. She was the leader of the Southern Hemisphere Last Glacial Maximum (SHeMax) project, which combined paleodata and modelling studies from across all southern latitudes and both terrestrial and marine environments to reconstruct environmental change and human-environment interactions during Mis 3 and 2. Lynda was also a champion for early career researchers and women in Science. As President of the Australasian Quaternary Association (AQUA) up until the time of her death, Lynda was actively engaged in promoting stronger demographic and gender balance in the Australasian Quaternary community.

In recognition of Lynda's outstanding contributions and tragic loss, an oral conference session in her honour took place at the recent (December 2022) AQUA Conference in Adelaide<https://aqua.org.au/conference/aqua-2022/aqua-2022-sessions/>. Another conference session in Lynda's honour will be held in July at the 2023 INQUA Congress in Rome<https://inquaroma2023.org/conference-sessions/> (Session 21). Together, the proceedings of these two sessions will provide the basis for sourcing submissions as well as the composition of the guest editor panel for this Special Issue. However, all papers will be considered that relate to Lynda's research interests which we have encapsulated in the title Southern Hemisphere records of Late Quaternary climate change, people and dust.

At this stage we are calling for prospective contributors to submit expressions of interest in the form of a provisional title and list of authors to the overseeing editor, Rewi Newnham (see contact details below). You are also encouraged to discuss your possible contribution with Rewi or any of the guest editors (listed below). We anticipate the formal submission process to follow the journal's online procedure, commencing sometime in the next few weeks. The timeline for submission will extend until later this year with a view to the Special Issue being published in the first half of 2024.
