Subject: My dad, Professor Edward Derbyshire

Dear Professor Hesse,

I hope you are all very well.

I'm sorry to tell you that Dad died yesterday at noon. He was at peace, and is no longer suffering. Dad was my light and my inspiration and I'm heartbroken. I've attached a photo of him a few months ago, smiling at us.

I would be grateful if you could share this news with your colleagues who also worked with Dad.

I know that the ED at 80 conference in Novi Sad was such a highlight in his life and career, and thank you most sincerely for that. Mum and Dad also had such a wonderful six years living and working in Australia (they did not want to leave), where Dad gained his PhD and helped to set up the new Geography Department at Monash.

The link between academics around the world striving to push forward the frontiers of understanding must never be broken. This is one of my father's many achievements, and we must honour it.
