Hi All,
I would like to advertise a fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Wollongong to work on climate, fire and vegetation interactions across the Holocene and MIS5e in eastern Australia https://www.earthworks-jobs.com/climate/wollongong24091.
These projects are linked to my ACR DECRA fellowship with the aim to better understand the relationship between fire, biomass, climate and human management across different time periods. These projects would suit someone interested in climate, environmental change or fire management. Applications are welcome for either domestic (Australian) or international candidates. They are due (via Earthworks) by the 31/10/2024.
Project options include:
Project 1: This PhD project will focus on developing fire and vegetation records from lake sediment records from MIS5e and the Holocene. Fire and vegetation records will be developed using traditional palynological and novel biomarker techniques. The fire and vegetation records developed by a successful candidate will be used to understand changing fire occurrence in Australia during different interglacial periods. Developed records will additionally be compared to climate reconstructions from the same sedimentary records.
Project 2: This PhD project will focus on developing new and novel palaeoclimate records from lake sediment records from MIS5e and the Holocene, including the application of oxygen and hydrogen isotope analysis and Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether lipids. The climate records developed by a successful candidate will provide important insights into the past climate of interglacial periods in Australia and be used to compare to fire and vegetation records.
Please forward this to any Honours of Masters student you think may be interested and feel free to encourage them to reach out if they have any questions.
Cheers,
Haidee
