THAILAND-CAMBODIA TENSIONS: WHAT WENT WRONG?

Speaker: Dr Chris Baker

Thursday 20 2003; 12.00-1.30 pm.

Room 4.44, Fourth Floor, Asian Studies Faculty (Baldessin Precinct
Building), ANU

Mob riots in Phnom Penh on 29 January destroyed the Thai embassy and
caused extensive damage to Thai business interests. The suddenness
and intensity of the riots was unexpected, coming at a time of
relative bilateral calm. What caused the outburst, and can relations
be put back on track?

All are welcome.

Dr Chris Baker is a long-time resident of Bangkok, and a prolific as
well as much quoted author on Thai politics. Recent publications
include (together with Pasuk Pongpaichit) Thailand's Boom and Bust
(1998), and Thailand's Crisis (2000).
