Abstract
This presentation aims to examine to what extent social boundaries are
collectively reconstructed by the Internet users in women's cyberspaces in
the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Hong Kong Special Administrative
Regions (HK). Especially, it focuses on boundaries that posit between the
public and the private, the political and the cultural, and the virtual and
the real. Three types of women's groups including non-governmental
organisations, self-helped groups and Boys Love sub-cultural groups are
selected with an attempt to explore what makes women users cross these lines
and the consequences on relations in social landscapes of these two
societies. Sharing the same cultural root but under different political and
social conditions, the PRC and HK provide ideal sites for comparing the
pattern of boundary shift which structures social relations on the gendered
web.
