Conflict in Southern Thailand: Causes and Prospects

Professor Zachary Abuza

Coombs Extension Seminar Room, on 11 October 2006, 2.00-3.30

The National Thai Studies Centre is pleased to announce an important
seminar on the conflict in Southern Thailand. Violence in the
Muslim south has escalated tragically since January 2004, resulting
in some 1,700 deaths. Thailand's post-coup government has announced
that resolving this conflict has its highest priority.

What are the reasons for this violence? Is the new government
likely to address this more successfully than its predecessor?

Dr Zachary Abuza is an Associate Professor of Political Science at
Simmons College, Boston, where he specialises in Southeast Asian
Politics, particularly in relation to security issues and the
ongoing regional threat of militant Islam. He is the author of
several important works in this area, and will publish two new works
later this year, one dealing with southern Thailand and the other
Indonesia.
