Abstract
While there are a number of publications dealing with the social, political,
historical and cultural backgrounds of the war in Aceh and other internal
factors leading to violence, researchers have only touched marginally upon
external aspects related to the Acehnese diaspora and their impact on
homeland politics. Although studying the Acehnese abroad, including their
aspirations, socio-political activities as well as cultural and economic
performances has been neglected so far, I argue that the Acehnese diaspora
is of fundamental importance to the politics of Aceh. By focussing on the
triangular relationship between homeland, host countries and diaspora, the
project aims to draw attention to the exchange of people, material resources
and ideas between the Acehnese diaspora in Malaysia and Scandinavia and the
homeland. It will describe and analyse various competing relations between
Acehnese 'abroad' and Acehnese 'at home'.
