Title: Logic vs. emotion: In the case of the particle omission in Japanese
Speaker: Duck-Young Lee, Japan Centre, ANU
In this seminar I will discuss the particle omission, which is well
known as a unique characteristic of spoken conversation in Japanese. I
will first clarify the environment of the particle omission, including
the generalisation as to what particles may or may not be omitted, and
in what genre the omission may occur. I will then offer an analysis of
its function, in conjunction with the interrelation of logic and emotion.
The point is that the use of language in face-to-face conversation often
involves the expression of the speaker's emotional aspects toward the
hearer and the particle omission functions to reinforce such an
emotional aspect, in compensation for the loss of the explicit
specification of logic.
