Dear Colleagues:

With much sadness, I pass on that former Dean of the ANU Faculty of
Asian Studies, Dr JTF (Jos) Jordens passed away last week.  A ceremony
is planned for this Friday.

A funeral service will be held tomorrow Friday 19 December at 11 a.m. in
John XXIII Chapel, ANU, Daley Rd, Acton, ACT, for Dr J.T.F. Jordens,
LicPhil, PhD(Louvain), DipEd(Melb), former Dean of the Faculty of Asian
Studies, who passed away on Sunday.

J.T.F. (Jos) Jordens, a graduate of the University of Louvain, Belgium,
established the first Department of Indian Studies in Australia at
Melbourne University in 1961. Joining the Faculty of Asian Studies in
1970, he served as its Dean from 1982-8. He retired in 1990 and was
Visiting Fellow from 1991-95.

Dr Jordens published widely on Hinduism. His work includes 'Gandhi’s
Religion. A Homespun Shawl', 'Dayanda Sarasvati. Essays on His Life and
Ideas', and 'Swami Shraddhananda. His Life and Causes'. In 2000 Dr
Jordens was awarded the Belgian Civil decoration of Officer in the Order
of Leopold for his academic achievements in Asian Studies (India) and
the creation of new academic institutions outside Belgium.
