This conference is a part of a series of events hosted by the Island
Southeast Asia Centre along the theme of /Intersections of Area, Media
and Cultural Studies/ which aim to critically question the established
understanding of, and the relationship between, these three studies,
with Southeast Asian region as the object of investigation. This
semester’s conference, on “Creative Industries, Youth Culture and
Identity Politics in Southeast Asia" is a seminal attempt to explore
issues and debate on cultural production in the context of cultural
industries and identity politics both within and outside the region. The
event brings together a range of speakers from various fields, including
film-making, art, education, Islamic studies, and creative industries. It
is hoped that this exciting program will shed light on some important
aspects of cultural production in the region, including links between
creative industries and identity politics, Islamic creative/cultural
industries, production and consumption of Islamic commodities, and
processes of cultural fusion and mediation in contemporary Southeast
Asia and beyond.
