Emerging Health Policy Research Conference

The Great Hall, University House, The Australian National University

Friday, 12 October 2007

The Menzies Centre for Health Policy invites you to join us for the
Emerging Health Policy Research Conference.

The conference will showcase the work in progress of current doctoral
and post-doctoral researchers.

Dr Dan Fox, Emeritus President, Milbank Memorial Fund (http://
www.milbank.org/) will be delivering the keynote address. Dr Fox's
presentation is entitled: Theories and Methods vs. Evidence: How
Research Informs Policy Over Time

Conventional wisdom for over a century has been that evidence from
research (that is, data and findings) can inform policy under
particular political and cultural conditions. Such phrases as
"evidence-based policy" and "knowledge exchange and transfer" express
the currently fashionable version of this wisdom. On the contrary,
the most significant and enduring effects of research on policy have
been the result of policymakers' internalization of the theories and
methods of science (including clinical and social science). This talk
offers examples of internalization and its effects over time from the
fields of economics and health services research. I draw these
examples from both research and my first-hand experience in the
politics of policy.
