East Timor: What went wrong? What prospects for the future?
Source: Vannessa Hearman <vhearman at bigpond.com>
In 1999, East Timor chalked up a major victory by
overthrowing the Indonesian occupation. This was also a
blow for the occupation's major backers: Australia, the US,
Great Britain. While hundreds of millions of dollars have
supposedly gone into reconstruction, why is this country
one of the poorest in Asia?
Where are the dreams of the first nation of the 21st
century today? Who is to blame?
what will be the effect of the resignation of Prime Minister
Mari Alkatiri?
Speaker: Vannessa Hearman
Vannessa Hearman lived and worked in East Timor during the
United Nations transition rule and experienced firsthand the
reconstruction and political process during that period.
She was a campaigner and a spokesperson for the Timor Sea
Justice Campaign in Melbourne.
She writes for Green Left Weekly and is involved in
Action in Solidarity with Asia and the Pacific (ASAP)
and the Asia Pacific Justice Forum (APJF).
