Diak ka la'e belun sira!
Beginning 6pm next Wednesday, 21 May 2007, a Tetum study group will be
meeting at the ANU campus, in the Basham room on the second floor of the
Baldessin Precinct Building (Bldg 110).

We have decided to establish the group to provide a forum for those of us in
Canberra who love speaking Timor-Leste's lingua franca Tetum (or 'Tetun', as
it is otherwise spelt), and have learnt it to at least a 'Beginner' level,
but currently have no means of maintaining or developing our newfound
ability. The invitation is extended to all Canberrans or visitors who fit
into this category; the activity is not exclusive to ANU students or staff.
The gatherings will take place each Wednesday from 6.00pm to 7.30pm in the
above location, and will be largely social and participant-driven. As the
coordinator, I will set a broad theme each week prior to the meeting and
encourage group members to bring along readings, sound recordings and any
other items which might help to stimulate discussion. Other than that, we
can approach each week in any way we want! We have invited friends from our
growing Timor-Leste community in Canberra to join us so as to help generally
with our Tetum and also provide rare exposure to Tetum as it is spoken in
Timor-Leste. In particular, our ANU Tetum lecturer, Adelaide Lopes, has
generously offered her time to the initiative.
I would like to set up a mailing list for the group, so please, if you'd
like to practice and improve your Tetum, or if you are from Timor-Leste
living in Canberra and would like to help promote the language, email me at
steven.sengstock at anu.edu.au to express your interest, and come along next
Wednesday to join in the fun!
Oh, and the theme for our first week will be appropriately titled - "How to
run a Tetum study group in a fun, social and non-scary way".
Maka ne'e deit.
Ate semana oin!

P.S. Please forward this email on to anyone else who you think would like to
get involved in the group.
