Dear UNIFEM Canberra Chapter Members and Friends

Please consider joining us at the combined Alola Foundation/UNIFEM Breakfast on Monday 11 May. We hope to raise enough money to build a small annex at Dili hospital for families of birthing mothers as well as to support the UNIFEM Timor Leste Peace Scholarship Program to provide additional training and learning opportunities for a young Timor Leste woman working in the area of child and maternal health in Timor Leste.

Timor Leste has one of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in the world - 830 mothers in every 100,000 live births and 85 babies in every 1,000 live births. Many women do not come to health facilities because they do not want to be away from family support. Many of the birthing complications are as a result of the mother suffering from conditions such as malnutrition, malaria and TB, which are prevalent in Timor-Leste. Currently, only 10% of pregnant women give birth under skilled care. This project endeavours to encourage women to give birth in a health facility, in safety, with dignity and with family support.

For only $AU10,000 it will be possible to be a self contained annexe to Dili Hospital to accommodate family members of birthing mothers.

UNIFEM Australia has committed to support the academic learning opportunities young women from Timor Leste in Australia. Our first Timor Leste Peace Scholar, a teacher/educator in maternal and child health who works in the Dili Institute of Health Sciences, has commenced her studies in Canberra (English) and will join us at the breakfast.

Please see the attached flyer for easy online booking arrangements. We would be very delighted if you could distribute this among your networks and encourage them to join us on the morning of the 11th - we are aiming for a full house.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can help with further information.

On behalf of

Libby Lloyd
