Scenes from an Occupation - "The Law Of Violence"
This is an intimate and confronting account of the last six months of Indonesia's occupation of East Timor. Filmmaker Carmela Baranowska is the only person to have documented this period. She first travelled to East Timor in March 1999, working as a one person crew. The footage includes eyewitness accounts of the role the Indonesian military played in a systematic campaign of destruction, murder and terror. "We may all die", says an East Timorese woman, "but if one is left, he will tell the story". This film is a testament to the East Timorese people's courage, strength and determination.
Originally screened on SBS TV, Part 2, "The Law of Violence" is 32 minutes and will be screened at ANU. It was awarded a Rory Peck Award in 2000.
This event will be chaired by Bu Wilson. Carmela Baranowska will briefly introduce the film. Following the screening, Carmela and Aderito Soares will lead discussion and be available for questions
