Security Council Report has published an Update Report on UN Peacekeeping Operations.
On 22 and 23 January, at the initiative of France and the UK, the Council will begin what seems likely to be an extended process of considering solutions to some of the big problems facing peacekeeping today. On 22 January there will be an informal seminar. On 23 January, a wider UN membership will take part in an initial debate on peacekeeping. While no substantive outcome is expected at this stage, a procedural decision on how to carry forward the suggestions coming out of the seminar and debate is possible. This Update Report looks at some of the problems facing UN peacekeeping and some past initiatives to reform peacekeeping. It provides analysis of the current issues the Council may be discussing. It also analyses the current dynamics in the Security Council and some of the areas in which options may lie for solutions.
