" THE Gillard government will have to negotiate with the
Greens to implement its East Timor solution for asylum
seekers. With a fragile hold on power in the lower house,
the government will need the support of each of its 76
backers to set up a refugee processing hub in a third
country, as promised before the election."

Organisations demand protection for asylum seekers
CPA: http://www.cpa.org.au/guardian/2010/1470/04-organisations-demand.html
"The possible formation of a government that would include
the Greens and independents has led a group of Australian
non-government organisations, including the National Council
of Churches, Amnesty International, the Asylum Seekers
Resource Centre, the Refugee Council of Australia and 17
other organisations, under a Regional Refugee Protection
framework, to issue a joint demand for protection for asylum
seekers from unjust and inhumane government policies. They
have called for a regional refugee protection framework,
based on the following principles: * There must be no
removal of asylum seekers from Australian territory for
processing in a third country."

"REFUGEE advocates hope independent MP Rob Oakeshott's
softer approach to asylum seekers will be a step forward in
the way they are treated. Mr Oakeshott, whose support will
likely be needed by the major parties to form government,
says Australia should avoid exporting its asylum seeker
problem to Nauru or East Timor."

Refugees as election issue an ‘abuse of human rights’
CW:

"The Mary MacKillop East Timor Mission has deplored the
attempt to make asylum seekers an election issue and looks
on it as an “abuse of human rights”. “The effort to shelve
the problem on to Timorese soil highlights the neglect by
successive Australian Governments to educate our population
in the obligations we have as signatories to the Convention
on Refugees,” said Sr Susan Connelly rsj, assistant
director of the mission." Damir Govorcin

"On the issue of a detention center in East Timor for those
seeking asylum in Australia: continued insensitivity by
both sides, especially in what relates to the eventual
location. One Timorese minister has suggested what he deems
to be a “win-win” idea to resolve the impasse – put them on
the Island of the Island. ... And so to put it simply: does
an independent East Timor want to re-veil Ataúro Island in
another “slow fog of agony”?"

East Timor disappointed over Australian PM's gas field comments
RA: http://www.radioaustralianews.net.au/stories/201008/2989229.htm
"East Timor has expressed deep disappointment in comments
from Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, regarding the
development of a gas field in the Timor Sea. ... The
Timorese Government says the remarks don't lift its
confidence in renewed cooperation on Greater Sunrise.
Australia's PM Julia Gillard wants to establish a refugee
processing centre in East Timor, the Timorese Government
says the two issues are separate." Sara Everingham
