Abstract
With an original centre of domestication still in dispute, taro (Colocasia esculenta) is widely
known in South East Asia and the Pacific as a staple food. As with other root crops, however,
its identification in archaeological contexts has been elusive as preservation of parenchyma
tissue, the main food product, is unlikely in most circumstances. A recent archaeobotanical
project in Timor-Leste aimed at the recovery, analysis and identification of charred plant
materials. This paper deals with the potential identification of plant taxa from the Araceae
and Dioscoreaceae families from archaeological sites there, using flotation and a Scanning
Electron Microscope.
