‘The Dynamics of Transitional Justice: International Models and Local Realities in East Timor’
Dr. Lia Kent’s book explores the disillusionment of the East Timorese with the official justice
processes of their government and the UN. Based on extensive fieldwork, it discusses how
local understandings of justice are informed by a range of influences outside the formal
justice processes.
Dr. Kent and Dr. Grenfell will also explore the reasons why East Timorese survivors are
engaging in practices such as the reburial of loved ones who died during the conflict and the
construction of monuments to keep the memories of the past alive. It is important that these powerful
customary belief systems and practices are understood as part of the ongoing pursuit of justice.
Lia has a long history of involvement with East Timor. As a community development worker she worked
with East Timorese asylum seekers in the mid 1990’s, before becoming a Human Rights Officer for the UN
from 2000 - 2002. She visits East Timor regularly and has completed a PhD on justice in East Timor.
Dr. Damian Grenfell is Director of the Globalism Research Centre. His research concentrates on different
patterns of social conflict and resolution across the local, national and global.
