Dr José Ramos-Horta’s determined pursuit of justice for Timor-Leste earned him worldwide recognition as an exponent of peace in the struggle for justice and human rights. In December 1996 José Ramos-Horta and Bishop Carlos Belo were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “their work towards a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in Timor-Leste”.

Other more recent awards include the UNPO prize, awarded by the Unrepresented National and Peoples Organisation for his “unswerving commitment to the rights of and freedoms of threatened peoples”, and the ‘Order of Freedom’ awarded by The Government of Portugal, the highest honour that this country can bestow. Victoria University awarded him the degree of Doctor of the University Honoris Causa in 2009.

Currently José Ramos-Horta is reviewing United Nations peace keeping operations in his role as Chair of the recently established United Nations High Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations.
