Jacinto Baptista is a rising star in the field of visual arts in Timor-Leste. He was born in Mehara, Lautem district, Timor-Leste in 1979. Incapacitated by the sudden onset of a spinal condition at the age of 20, Jacinto began to explore painting as a means of giving expression to his physical suffering and love for his country and national culture. His oil paintings depict scenes of traditional village life and the beauty and dignity to be found in the daily existence of ordinary men, women and children. In spite of never receiving any formal instruction in the visual arts, Jacinto is an exceptionally gifted artist and portrait painter, inspired by the gifts of artists of the photorealism style.

A small number of paintings and drawings will be available for purchase on the night. Proceeds from all sales will go towards defraying the costs of medical treatment for Jacinto’s spinal condition. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Xanana Gusmão Reading Room, Dili’s first and only Public Library, in facilitating the visit to Melbourne of Jacinto Baptista.
