Seminar: 'Academic and Professional Communication Skills in Timor-Leste: Perspectives from Lecturers in Development-related Disciplines'

Trent Newman, PhD candidate, University of Melbourne.

Auditorio, Campus Liceu, UNTL, Thursday 9 February, 4pm

This seminar focuses on the beliefs and practices of Timorese university lecturers from agriculture, petroleum studies, tourism, and community development studies regarding the development of their students’ communication skills for study and work in these industries. We will discuss some implications of these lecturers’ beliefs about their students’ capabilities and potential with regard to teaching methods and workforce development. We will also examine some common communication practices in Timorese tertiary classrooms such as mixing languages, translating technical terms into Tetun, and using multimodal communication. The seminar will include recommendations for faculty and institutional leaders to consider and discuss, such as increased collaboration between language support programs and faculties.
