*RESEARCH PRESENTATON: PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS OF WOMEN AS POLITICAL LEADERS IN
TIMOR LESTE*
*with International Women’s Development Agency *
Research Lead: Dr. Sara Niner (School of Social Sciences, Monash University)
This presentation reports on the findings of a research project recently
undertaken in Timor-Leste investigating the cultural, social and historical
factors affecting public decision-making in voting for women and the
perceptions of candidate’s legitimacy and capacity to lead. This project
aims to build understanding to foster women’s political leadership
particularly at the suku level. This research is part of the Women’s Action
for Voice and Empowerment (WAVE) program that brings together and supports
women, organisations and movements in Asia and the Pacific region to
increase the representation of women in diverse leadership positions. This
project will inform the *International Women’s Development Agency *WAVE
program to effectively strengthen Timorese women’s meaningful political
participation, leadership and advocacy for the issues that are important to
them.
