Pat Walsh, "Freeing Indonesia from East Timor”

East Timor is no longer part of Indonesia but Indonesia continues to repress the messy divorce like a bad dream. Pat Walsh argues that, while the Indonesian people bear no responsibility for Suharto’s misguided adventure in East Timor, the nation’s long-term interests will be better served by addressing the past ‘dengan hati besar dan kepala dingin’. Furthermore, he believes that new generations of Indonesians, freed from the past by distance and education, will lead this process.
