Dear Timor researchers,
On 31st May 1976 Indonesia flew in several journalists and Diplomats from Jakarta for a Ceremony at Clube Sporting in Dili. There they observed 37 delegates vote for the Portuguese Province of Timor to integrate with Republic of Indonesia. A similar event had been held in 1969 in West Papua where hand-picked delegates voted to become part of the Republic of Indonesia. Fortunately for Timor-Leste, the Indonational Community failed to give it the support the Indonesian government wanted but sadly it was another 23 years before the TImorese got a chance for one person one vote and the West Papuans still haven't had one.

The Restaurant at Sporting has recently been leased by Dili Restauranteur Cesar Trinito Gaio and he is moving his famous Dilious Restaurnat to its front room and verandah of the Club. On hearing it was the location for this historic event he planned to hold a dinner there every year on the anniversary so that young generations can learn more about thei history of Timor-Leste and the struggle. Unfortunately COVID got in the way and it will be predominantly a Zoom meeting with speakers coming in from far and wide including
