[Galileo] PhD top up Scholarship and research assistant position

Two opportunities are available at the University of Melbourne for researchers/research students associated with Dr Emma Kowal’s ARC Project “From scientific specimen to Indigenous cultural property: The collection and use of Indigenous DNA samples since the 1960s”. This transdisciplinary study draws on anthropological and historical methods to investigate the provenance and use of Indigenous sample collections held in Australia.

PhD Top-up Scholarship

A top-up scholarship of $5000 p/a is available for a PhD student who can secure a primary scholarship (e.g. APA) for full time study at The University of Melbourne on this project. To receive a primary scholarship candidates should have an honours or masters degree in anthropology, history or other relevant discipline. The top-up scholarship is renewable for the duration of the primary scholarship, subject to an annual review of research progress. Additional funding will also be available to support fieldwork and conference travel. The candidacy would commence in mid-2012.
Possible topics for a PhD research project could include: ethnography of genomic science and/or Indigenous communities who have participated in genetic research; histories of biological sample collection in Indigenous communities (e.g. 20th century scientific expeditions); ethical issues associated with contemporary biobanks that include Indigenous samples; Indigenous modes of personhood in the postgenomic age; the ‘re-biologisation’ of race; other related topics. While the PhD would be based in anthropology and supervised by Dr Emma Kowal, co-supervision in relevant disciplines (e.g. history, bioethics, cultural studies, history and philosophy of science) would be arranged as appropriate.

Note: The 2012 rate for a stipend is $23,728 p/a ($28,728 with top-up).

3-year research assistant position - part time (0.4FTE)

A part-time research assistant is required to work 2 days a week on this ARC project. Tasks will include administration as well as literature review and assistance with data collection and analysis. Successful applications will have a degree in a relevant social science; have experience in conducting research and have excellent organisational, written and oral communication skills.

Commencing February/March 2012 at Research Assistant Level 1 ($33.90/hour). The recipient of the top-up PhD scholarship could also fill the research assistant position if appropriate.
