Thanks, Nick, for revitalising the list. Here is a test email (with apologies to those whose inbox I am flooding) to see if my message is going through.

Hi everyone

I've just reactivated the IMC Mail list, which was one of the pandemic victims. But it's recovered.

I took the liberty of adding all your addresses to the list -- and you should all have automatically gotten subscription notices. If you don't want to be on it, of course, all you have to do is hit the unsubscribe button. In that case, apologies for my presumption, but it was easier to do a bulk subscription than have everyone go on one by one for approval.

The list should now work so that any member can post to it without moderation: your message will go straight through to the other list members. You are very welcome to use the list not only for announcements like Heba's about the monthly meet up but also for links and news about other events of interest to members, and to new publications.

Lastly, just to mention that we plan to have a series of informal talks in the last months of the year, on Fridays. There will be an announcement soon. If anyone would like to present on work, published or in progress, then please get in touch with me: the basic format will be one hour, 30min for the presentation, structured dialogue or whatever, and 30min q+a.

Best wishes
Nick

Dear All,

Thank you to everyone who joined us virtually today and made it a very enriching conversation. Thank you, Katrin, for your presence and input too.

We had a chance to discuss some of our concerns, challenges, and 'aha' moments with respect to our research and interview data; the importance of attending to interview meta-data (silences, evasions); comparisons of survey research versus open & in-depth interviews; ethical dilemmas that we encounter in the course of our fieldwork as well as ethics protocols (and how they may or may not work in one's field-site).

For the next session, Friday (October 1st), we will focus on Genealogies. Other topics highlighted for subsequent discussion include: ethical challenges of working with interview data, and questions of transparency. I think we can combine this discussion with one on social media analysis/digital ethnography since the former also raises questions re: transparency/citations. For this particular session, I will try to loop in someone who has worked within this domain so we may be able to ask questions and discuss with more depth.

For October 1st (Friday), do mark the calendar for a discussion on genealogies. If anyone has recommendations on literature to read and share, please let me know. I will compile and send through.

Until then,

Dear all,

Hope everyone is well under the lockdown!

In place of our conversation over coffee on the red couch at the Music School, we will meet virtually on zoom - for those interested. Bring a cup of tea/coffee and yourself tomorrow (Sept 3rd) at 11 am.

As decided in the first meeting, we will discuss ethnographic/interpretive approaches to interviews and our experiences, as well as anything else anyone would like to discuss.

Dear All,

Thank you to those who showed up today for the coffee catch up - and to those who couldn't join this time around, we missed you.

Some updates:

We had an opportunity to speak about our respective research and how each of us arrived at, discovered interpretive methods; how and why this resonated with us based on previous disciplinary background/training. For the upcoming meetings, we decided to

  * to use this space to bounce off ideas more generally (for those of us who are in the early stages of working on their research proposal)
  * to dedicate each meeting to a certain area that we would like to focus on - social media/digital ethnography; ethnographic interviewing; genealogies and conceptual histories were some areas that were identified. This will grow based on feedback of those who could not join us today
  * For the next meeting (September 3rd, Friday) - we will focus on Ethnographic and Interpretive Approaches to Interviewing. I will put together a resource list based on recommendations I receive from this group and send it around before our next meeting. Please send me recommendations, if you have any.

We have a hidden community of interpretivist researchers, and we hope that our group can grow with time. Our our way out, we met Dr. Liyana Kayali from Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies who indicated her interest in joining this group. So welcome Liyana (adding you to this list) - ahlan wa sahlan! 🙂

I realize there are a number of people within this email list. If there is anyone who would not like to receive updates from these meetings (or unsubscribe), please send me a note so I am not spamming your inbox! 🙂

Rest - I hope we can make the community grow, spread the word, and also get more anthropologists on board and scholars from other disciplines that are inclined towards interpretive methodologies.

Have a good weekend!

Subject: Monthly Conversations Over Coffee (Aug 6) - Interpretive Methods Research

Dear All,

Hope everyone is doing very well!

After an extended Covid break, we are excited to finally re-start our monthly HDR/postgraduate meetings for the Interpretive, Method and Critique (IMC) Network! This is an opportunity for interpretivist researchers at ANU to meet informally over a cup of coffee - to share their research/methodologies/chapters in progress and to discuss texts that may be of interest.

In pre-Covid times, our meetings would be held the first Friday of each month (thanks to our lovely Suzanne!) on the red couch of Atticus Café (previously Biginelli) on the 5th Floor of ANU School of Music. So long as social distancing allows, we are keen to keep up the tradition of meeting in person and look forward to welcoming new faces!

Our first meeting for 2021 will be at 11 am on Friday, August 6th at the Music School cafe . We would love to hear about everyone’s projects, your suggestions for the monthly meetings, and your thoughts on what might help you make the most of these meetings.

Thank you to April Biccum and Nick Cheesman for initiating this network at ANU. For more information on the IMC Network and Research Cluster, please check the website https://politicsir.cass.anu.edu.au/interpretation-method-and-critique-imc-network-and-research-cluster and subscribe to the mailing list here: https://mailman.anu.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/imcnetwork

Please spread the word to anyone keen to join the interpretivist community - but do RSVP (with any +1 or 2) so I have a rough headcount before the meeting.

We look forward to seeing you!
