Dear IMCers
Forwarding this message from Dvora Yanow -- note there are some virtual
options. And if you do have a book coming or out, let us know too!
This might be my last message to the list for the year; if so, wishing
those of you having holidays over the new year all the best for those
and looking forward to a jam packed 2022
Best wishes
Nick

Have you published a book using interpretive methods and methodologies
in 2020 or 2021? If so, would you be interested in joining us for the
workshop *“*Strutting Our Stuff”: Celebrating New Interpretive Books in
Empirical Political Science, at the Western Political Science
Association’s 2022 meeting? At the moment it is scheduled to take place
in Portland, OR on March 9; see below for virtual options.
WPSA has a tradition of Wednesday, preconference workshops. Since 2013,
we and others have organized various kinds of sessions focusing on
interpretive research. For 2022, we—Farah Godrej (UC Riverside), Peri
Schwartz-Shea (emerita, Utah), and Dvora Yanow (Wageningen)—are planning
a session that will feature authors of newly published books using
empirical interpretive research methods.
We are planning for a hybrid (in-person and online) session from
1:45-5.45 p.m., which will be a kind of “speed dating” to introduce
authors of books presenting empirical interpretive research to
participants in the session. Each author will have ~10 minutes
(depending on how many authors we have) to introduce their book topic
and tell in what ways they use interpretive research methods in it. In
the event that the conference goes virtual, we will switch to an online
session, from 8 a.m. to noon, Pacific time. We don’t know at this moment
when that decision will be made.
If you would like to join in, please send us the following: the book
title, publication details, and a 2-3 sentence explanation of what is
"interpretive" about it, whether in methodological terms or in terms of
specific methods. The number of slots is limited, and we will accept
expressions of interest on a first-come, first-served basis.
Also, if you cannot make it, please send us the same information,
anyways, as we are trying to produce a bibliography of recently
published books doing interpretive empirical research.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Farah, Peri, and Dvora

PS WPSA also wants to know if you have a recently published book. Their
information follows. Please contact them directly about this.
*A RECENT BOOK AUTHOR? LET WPSA KNOW*
If you have published a book in the past two years or have one in press,
we would like to know. The WPSA has many successful authors and editors
among its members and we would like to do more in sharing their
accomplishments. As you may have seen, we had a very successful table
set aside at past meetings to display the work of our authors/editors.
We will be putting together a similar table at the Portland meeting in
March. In previous years, we have approached publishers directly to ask
that our members’ books be displayed at our annual meeting. We have
received feedback from some editors and marketing people that they are
more likely to display books if the authors make the request themselves.
So, we are asking you to contact either your editor or marketing person
to request your book or books be displayed. If they are interested in
doing so, please have them contact Elsa Favila at favilaej at csus.edu
<mailto:favilaej at csus.edu>. The cost for displaying a single book is
inexpensive ($50).
In addition to getting your book displayed, we would also like to
publicize your work in /The Western/ (the WPSA Newsletter) and on /The
New West/ (our blog). If you have been recently published (2020-21) or
are soon to be (2022), please send us a note with a *full
citation* (authors, full title of book, publisher, and year; it helps us
save time if the citation is in Note format using the Chicago Style with
the authors’ first and last names in normal order). If the book has
received any awards or special recognition, please include that
information. If you have a photo of the book’s cover, please send that
as well. Finally, let us know if you would be willing to write something
related to the book in the association’s blog. Send this information to
Richard Clucas, WPSA Executive Director, hprc at pdx.edu <mailto:hprc at pdx.edu>.
