Hello everyone

As previously announced next Friday, March 10 we will get our IMC seminar series for 2023 off to a great start with Frederic Schaffer (UMass-Amherst) speaking to us on interpretive interviewing. Fred is among the leading scholars of interpretivist methodologies and methods in the US academy known to participants in our courses at the ANU via his Elucidating Social Science Concepts, but also to many through his Democracy in Translation, and his edited volume Elections for Sale, so this should be a presentation of interest to lots of folks beyond our IMC community. Details here: https://politicsir.cass.anu.edu.au/events/what-interpretivist-interviewing-frederic-schaffer

Pass it on. Dates and most details of the rest of the series are now online. Our other speakers and topics are

Adele Webb (UC, 24 March), Genealogy as Method
Laura J Shepherd (USyd, 28 April) and colleagues, A Decolonial Feminist Politics of Fieldwork
Cai Wilkinson (Deakin, 12 May), Is Queer an Interpretive Method?
Anastasia Shesterinina (Sheffield, 26 May), Mobilizing in Uncertainty (book discussion)

Two other items:

1. Venue: Though as in the last two years the seminars will all be online for folks in Canberra we have booked the seminar room on the 4th floor of the Hedley Bull Building to use as a venue where we can come together to listen to the speakers and discuss their presentations among ourselves. If you are on campus at the ANU or nearby come join us there if you are able to do so. The room is booked for the regular seminar time (12-1pm) for the whole of semester 1.

2. IMC get together! Before it gets too cold and we get too exhausted with 2023, let’s have an IMC get together, as follows:

Day: March 24, Friday (the evening of the second seminar in the series)
Time: 5pm
Venue: TBC (probably NFSA if the cafe and garden are open; more closer to time)
Who: anyone on the IMC list, friends of IMC, students, faculty with interpretivist interests
Please note it in your diaries and we hope to see some of you there then.

Thanks, and stay tuned for more
Nick and April
