Dear IMC listserv,
For those of you who don't know me, I am a feminist social anthropologist of China and Emeritus Professor in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific.
I'd like to tell you about my new book, Ginkgo Village: Trauma and Transformation in Rural China (ANU Press, 2024).
The book draws on extensive ethnographic and life-history research that I conducted in a village in central-eastern China, but it is not a straight academic ethnography or history. Instead, it's a melding of ethnographic storytelling, social history and personal reflection. At its heart is a collection of semi-fictional stories about Ginkgo Villagers' lives and life-histories and about my own and my research assistants' experiences in the village.
Two themes are threaded through the stories: Trauma and transformation; and empathy, interpretation and knowledge-building.
You can read the book for free online or buy a hard copy here: http://doi.org/10.22459/GV.2024
There will be a book launch and conversation between myself and Nick Cheesman about the book on 1st August.
