Dear IMC listserv members

I write to you in accordance with clause 58.3 of the ANU Enterprise Agreement that gives staff the right to communicate with colleagues in relation to Union business, including via University communication systems. I have never previously exercised this right via the IMC listserv, and would prefer not to do so now, but circumstances demand it.

Last week the ANU Vice Chancellor proposed major structural changes to the ANU that would close the College of Health and Medicine, rename three other colleges, and reorganise four (including the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, where I am employed, which co-hosts the IMC with the College of Arts and Social Sciences).

For details see here: https://www.anu.edu.au/news/all-news/staff-engagement-renew-anu

While the College of Arts and Social Sciences will remain unchanged under the current proposal, it is by now clear that there will be further changes into 2025 that could be consequential for our Network.

Foremost among these, the National Tertiary Education Union estimates that for University management to meet its proposed savings in expenditure it will have to reduce our workforce by the equivalent of 638 Full Time Equivalent staff — among them, potentially, academic members of the IMC Network, or professional staff on whom we rely to make the Network a success.

The Union has called a rally for next Wednesday, 16 October, 12pm, on the Kambri lawn, which is open to all. The rally announcement, below, contains more details. I urge you to attend if you can, to learn more about what is proposed, why we are in this situation, and how you can get involved.

Thank you,
Nick

NTEU Rally against Renew ANU
Wednesday 16 October, 12pm - Kambri

Dear Nick,

We'll be holding a rally in relation to last week's announcement of Renew ANU - an ANU initiative which seeks to cut staff expenditure by $100 million by 1 January 2026.

We call on all ANU staff, students, and the broader community to attend. It's important that we push back against the university's financial mismanagement, which will likely have impacts on the lives of ANU staff, students, and the broader community that ANU serves.

As part of Renew ANU, last week ANU announced the disestablishment of the College of Health and Medicine (CHM), along with 50 job cuts. This comes only a year after buying a $16.75 million block of land for a new ANU health precinct.

We believe the proposed job cuts are just the tip of the iceberg.

ANU has announced its intention to cut staff expenditure by $100 million by 1 January 2026. In last year's Annual Report, staff expenditure was $816,823,000 - meaning that a $100 million reduction is 12.24% of expenditure. ANU's most recent reported FTE was 5214 - if 12.24% of those jobs were to go, that would equate to 638 FTE positions.

At our meeting today, we also went through the top-heavy nature of ANU's management structure. According to Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) statistics, overall staffing levels increased in the last 12 months (in headcount) by 4.2%, but management positions increased by 16.7%.

ANU Senior Executive need to come clean on:

  *   how they turned a $60m deficit into a $200m deficit;
  *   how many job losses they anticipate as a result;
  * whether senior executive will be taking salary cuts of 12.24% or more to contribute to savings; and
  * which senior leaders will be held accountable for the mismanagement, which is likely to affect the livelihoods of ANU staff.

By standing together, we will demonstrate that ANU is our university - it does not belong to the Bishops and Bells that have overseen this mismanagement.

We hope to see you at the rally next week.

In solidarity,

Lachlan and Millan
