Dear IMC listserv

As many of you are know, in addition to my IMC hat I have another as Director of the Myanmar Research Centre at the ANU and today I’m writing in that capacity.

All of you will by now have heard of the massive earthquake that hit the second biggest city in Myanmar, the ancient town of Mandalay, on March 28.

The difficulties of getting assistance to earthquake survivors are compounded by the persistence of military dictatorship, and armed conflict. Despite the disaster, the military government has continued air strikes against enemies and civilians in earthquake affected areas.

Aware that many of you might be wondering how you can support emergency relief efforts without money falling into the hands of this hateful military regime, I am forwarding the ANU Myanmar Students Association emergency appeal information, attached.

Our students are closely connected to groups working on the ground who can safely and ethically deliver assistance that will not support military rule.

Even if you cannot contribute support financially you can send them words of support at this difficult time for them and their families.

The National Unity Government’s representative in Australia has also issued an appeal, and if you would prefer to donate to their Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management then you can look for information online or write to me for details.
