Subject: Invitation: Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference, Sept. 2011

Dear subscribers to Climate-L, dear policy makers, dear academics and scholars -

for all of us in the legal sphere, there is now a new forum for discussing and furthering issues of international environmental law. As a member of the board of the New Association "Internationaler Umweltrechtstag Hamburg e.V." I cordially invite you to the Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference (HILC) taking place in Hamburg, Germany, on 15 and 16 September 2011.

This event will take place for the first time this year, spurred by the nomination of the City of Hamburg as the "European Green Capital 2011". As one of the core events during this year, the Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference will assemble lawyers and decision makers from governments, law firms, public administration, universities and NGOs. The conference will provide a high level forum for international dialogue on the strengthening and further development of environmental law.

Most pertinent to this mailing list, climate change and climate protection is going to be one of the two thematic focuses of presentations and panel discussions during the Conference. As a traditional seaport, Hamburg also has a special duty to speak up for limiting environmental hazards caused by the growing shipping sector –the second focus of the HILC. Forums discussing the “Protection of the Marine Environment and Climate Change”, and “Offshore Wind Energy” will complete the program. There will also be ample opportunity for high-level discussions including participation of the audience. All participants are invited to a townhall reception by the Major of Hamburg on Thursday evening.

Speakers from all over the world will attend, including, among others:

Professor Daniel Bodansky, Arizona State University,Jos Delbeke, Deputy Director-General fort he Environment, European CommissionProfessor Dr. Martin Faulstich, Chairman of the German Advisory Council on the Environment,Lawrence D. Barchue Sr., Senior Deputy Director, Member State Audit and Internal Oversight Services, IMO,Professor Dr. Alexander Proelß, University of Trier,Professor Catherine Redgwell, University College London, Faculty of Laws andJochen Flasbarth, President of the German Federal Environment Agency. We would be delighted if you would participate and contribute to the HIELC with your expertise, views and ideas. Please refer to the enclosed program and our website www.hielc.org[http://www.hielc.org/] for further information.
You can also register now on www.hielc.org[http://www.hielc.org/]. There is a limited amount of subsidised travel and participation tickets available, which you can also apply for online. A personal contact for all organisational matters is also provided on our website.

I hope to see some of you there!

Dr. Roda Verheyen
Former director of the “Climate Justice Programme”, practising attorney at law focusing on environmental and climate change law, member of the board of the "Internationaler Umweltrechtstag Hamburg e. V."
