Hi Bill!

Northern Ireland has a devolved Government.  Total Independence doesn’t seem often discussed.  I am no economist but I doubt if any greater devolution would be viable.
The tension in Northern Ireland is between partial independence and total annexation.

The present arrangement was the subject of a referendum in 1998.  The results were:

No

Republic of Ireland

(94.39%)

(5.61%)

Northern Ireland

676 966
(71.12%)

274 879
(28.88%)

Clearer than most elections!

So where do we go now? Belfast or Dublin a suburb of Boston?

With the greatest respect to dreaming outsiders, GB is not "in" Northern
Ireland at all. Northern Ireland is an entirely democratic province within
the United Kingdom.
There are those who would annexe it to the Republic of Ireland by force, but
mercifully that is not the present stated policy of the Republic.

The opening publisher's paragraph about a new book about Ireland is quoted
immediately below. I'm curious about its description of No. Ireland as a
"miltiary occupation." The southern 26 counties became "Ireland" after its
war for independence. Last month, I did not see one British soldier in
Belfast. On my trip from Belfast to Dublin, the only way you know you've
crossed the apparently virtual border is the road signs---which suddenly
change from English only, to both English and Irish. Is the lack of military
checkpoints consistent with a military occupation of No. Ireland? While I'm
totally in sync with the author, re the unsoundness of G.B.'s continued
presence in No. Ireland, is this scenario in fact a "militrary occupation?"

"During the past three decades, international legal expert Francis A.Boyle
has dealt with some of the most difficult problems created by Britain's
continued military occupation of six northeast counties inIreland. In so
doing, he along with other Irish Americans engaged the formidable Irish
American domestic lobby in support of the Irish resistance."
