I have also received off list a response to the effect that it would be breaking the law and that therefore it is unethical (specifically in a democracy).
I think there's a lot to be said for this argument but:
(a) it avoids the key issue raised by the question; and
(b) it's difficult to support as a general proposition (eg it would obviate the knowledge requirement that others think is important).
