I was a young physicist  at the time. I was just completely amazed  
that you could do something at optical frequencies which was so great  
at amplifying signals of interest to radio physicist or anybody else.  
Remembers MASERs?

There was no immediate, or for that matter even obvious application  
at the time.

Bloody smart though.
