I registered hhcs.gov.au for the then Department of Health, Housing
and Community Services in early 1994 and then ran a UUCP feed from
ADFA (thanks Christopher!) for mail and news. It seems to have gone
now but I believe it ran from then until some time in 1999. I also
registered health.gov.au as a placeholder in 1995 before I left the
Department.
In 1994/5 the Department's official Internet access was via Telecom's
"Telememo" service at, from memory, around $0.60 per message sent and
received, transmitted via Austpac (X.25) to and from the Department's
office automation suite, Dec All-In-One running on DEC 9000 and 6000
series VMS machines. You needed your Director's permission for
*every* message.
Carl.
