What's the worlds' most successful programming environment?
Ain't any proprietary product - I bet it's something like PERL or 'gcc'.
Built out of love for the task and the kudos of just doing it.
And who are *the* world experts in Microsoft's SMB protocol(s) - not
Microsoft (they churn the people in the team pretty fast) - it's the SAMBA
team...
What's the world's most used web server - bigger than everything else put
together? Apache, not any commercial offering.
And what software switches the bulk of email on the Internet -
sendmail/postfix/.... all OSS - *not* commercial products.
The important part of "Open Source" is not *free*, but *open*.
You're *never* going to be hung out to dry by commercial concern.
Commercial considerations *are* important - businesses have to get
something back so they keep going.
What Open Source Software shows is:
- it's possible to make money *and* publish your source
- the best software is *not* always propriatery
- there are market niches when Free, Open and Propriatery solutions
are each the best answer.
- Customers respond to *choice*
Sorry everyone if the Trolls come out to play ;-)
