Preserving the User Centric Internet White Paper
Contributed by Matthew Shears, Director of Public Policy

The User Centric Internet (UCI) is a major strategic ISOC public
policy program for 2007-2009. The purpose of the UCI work is to:

. reassert, in debates and discussions related to the future of the
Internet, the importance of the design values and fundamental principles
that have underpinned the Internet's success. The Internet Society
believes that principles such as openness, user choice and control,
edge based intelligence, etc., are central to a thriving Internet and,
we believe, will be so for the foreseeable future. In focusing on
user-centricity the Internet Society is seeking to ensure that
the primacy of the user is not forgotten when it comes to
new architectures, commercial offerings and policy making."
(From the UCI page on the ISOC site).

ISOC has released a White paper on UCI and is inviting comments
and feedback on the paper. The White Paper asks a range of
important questions, and points to a number of factors central
to UCI that need to be taken into account in shaping the future
Internet. For details of the UCI policy program and the draft paper,

3. Chapter News

ISOC Australia
Contributed by Tony Hill

ISOC-AU has just completed a successful national roadshow of
industry workshops for the IPv6 for e-Business project.

The project has been hosted by a consortium of organisations
including .auDA, AEEMA and BuildersNet and has been funded by the
Australian Government through its ITOL program. Funding will conclude
at the end of March 2007. Full documentation of this project is
available on the Website www.ipv6.org.au including plenty of
links to key public domain information for implementation and
transition of IPv6. The site particularly includes analysis of
various business cases for IPv6 as well as capacity to
download a Return on Investment (ROI) calculator.

ISOC-AU has become a focus for discussion of implementation and
opportunities based on IPv6 through its IPv6 Special Interest
Group and is keen to receive feedback and comments on
the site. Tony Hill, President of ISOC-AU is chairing the
SIG and is contactable at president at isoc- au.org.au.
This project is endorsed by ISOC and the IPv6 Forum.

Development of a prototype for an IPv6 Easy Access Device
that will allow automation of IPv6 tunnelling has been supported
by the IPv6 for e-Business project. Successful testing of the
device has been completed this month by members of ISOC-AU.

It now provides transit of IPv4 and IPv6 packets and therefore
connectivity from a small local network to the worldwide
IPv6 Internet - including the dancing turtle, see www.kame.net
for the turtle. See http://www.ipv6.org.au/tterm.html for a
description of the Easy Access Device.

The dates for the next Australian IPv6 Summit have been set at
19 to 21 November 2007 to be held in Canberra. ISOC-AU will
be one of the joint host organisations for the summit which
was well attended in 2006. A new Website is now online for
the summit at: http://www.ipv6.org.au/summit/ <snip>
