Don't knock the use of sewerage ducting.
When I was a teenager, Morse Code was all the go, and I had a private
telegraph line between my bedroom and that of my best friend, living a few
doors up from me.
We had to get the line across a couple of intervening houses, and so we
strung it up aerially. However it sagged one hot night, and caught the
old-lady next door across the throat as she staggered down to the back-lane
dunny at midnight. So aerial-stringing got banned.
Eventually we flushed a large wad of cotton-wool down the sewerage pipe with
some fishing-line attached (from the outside vents in his place), and
managed to hook it out of the sewer in mine.
It worked quite well for years. Of course it was not quite broadband.
