A book that I would recommend is called Snowball Earth. It's about
the geological history of the planet, written in accessible language,
about the theory that in the PreCambrian, the planet was pretty much
covered in ice, had very little oxygen in the atmosphere, and it was
just after that point when complex life emerged. Worth a read.
