As someone who spent time living in a desert, this will work great 
until you do get a humid day. When that comes, give up. The principle 
won't hold any more. Evap coolers were common in Arizona, but when 
the monsoon season hit, July/August, also some of the hottest times 
of the year, they were hopeless, so many people had both.

As for cost, if anyone is thinking about putting in a/c, consider a 
split system. Mine cost $2000, installed, and cools my open plan 
house to 25c quite easily. My living space is about 18sqs, but I shut 
off the bedrooms, so it's probably cooling much the same space as 
yours, Howard.
